GMRS Reaches Milestone

As of April 14, 2021, the total number of GMRS licensees in the United States reached 100,000.  The increased interest in the General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS), and other forms of two-way radio, has resulted in a steady increase in new licenses issued by the FCC.  A GMRS license can be applied for online and requires no test.  When the new fee reduction goes into effect, more applications are expected.

The Final

C o m m e n t a r y

Now that the number of GMRS licenses have topped 100,000 and sales of radio equipment is through the roof, maybe the mainstream manufacturers will pay attention.  Will more equipment makers offer additional features in line with the needs of GMRS users?  Listening Midland?  Motorola, you there?  Knock, knock, Kenwood.  Icom, we know you make UHF CB radios for Australia (the GMRS equivalent for down under).

Just in case you're listening, here are some features that might actually help out many GMRS radio customers.

  • An honest description of expected range that's not misleading
  • Easily understood equipment manuals
  • Specific manuals for programming frequencies and tones
  • Equipment that is BOTH FCC Part 95 and Part 90 approved
  • Radios that can be programmed for split tones, if needed
  • Operator selectable tones for each channel
  • Radios that can be easily programmed from the front panel, or;
  • Programming software that doesn't take 4 degrees to figure out.

There, that wasn't so hard.  Now get to work.  You can do it!  More ideas for the manufacturers?  Post your comments here.
